Major truck and industry insurance company NTI has issued a warning  ahead of  Australia’s peak storm season, and is urging businesses to take action now to protect their people, property, and assets.

NTI says storm season typically runs  from around now until April, with the company saying that the Bureau of Meteorology is warning that we can expect an average of four tropical cyclones cross Australia’s coast each year.

NTI, which lays claim to the title of Australia’s largest transport and logistics insurance specialist, said early preparation can help with safety measures and may minimise impacts to business operations.

“Storms can develop rapidly and cause significant damage to infrastructure, disrupt supply chains, and endanger lives,”  said the heavy motor risk engineer at NTI, Paul Bressan.

“Being prepared for extreme weather can help reduce disruptions and damage. Now is the time to update your emergency contact lists, stock emergency kits with essentials like torches, water and first aid equipment, and make a plan for securing and protecting mobile plant & equipment if possible.”

NTI points out that, quite obviously, for the transport industry, storm season coincides with the end-of-year Christmas delivery season.

“Roads regularly flood and are cut off due to heavy rain, so it’s important to plan your trip ahead, take note of forecast weather, consider alternative routes, and check road closures before departing,” Bressan said.

“For those on the road during extreme weather, slow down, take extra care, and most importantly, never drive through flood waters.”

NTI’s chief customer officer Janelle Greene, said now was the perfect opportunity for businesses to review and update their business continuity plans (BCP), which should be done every 12 months.

“BCPs outline critical steps to protect operations and keep people safe during unforeseen events, including storms,” Greene said.

“Transport, marine, and logistics workers naturally work in more exposed environments. It’s crucial to have clear procedures for protecting personnel, property, equipment and freight.

Leading up to storm season, NTI suggest business operators, conduct evacuation drills, back up critical data, update and distribute emergency contact numbers, including local emergency services, and prepare evacuation kits, which include torches, food, water, and first aid equipment.
